A website can only spam you if you give them your email address.

There are thousands of 'bad' sites which will infect your computer with malware (viruses and spyware). There are also lots of 'good' sites which are unwittingly carrying malicious advertising or which have had malicious code in some way attached - including MySpace and Facebook.

A Hosts file will stop your pc connecting to known 'bad' sites.

If you use search engines, e.g. Google, McAfee's SiteAdvisor will warn you about known 'bad' sites.

It's essential to have a good anti-virus program and to keep *all* your software up to date. Secunia PSI is an excellent and easy-to-use freebie which will help you do this.

Using Firefox with NoScript will keep you a lot safer.

A site doesn't have spam. Spam is an email which is unwanted. don't give your email to the untrusted sites. if you want to sign up in many sites which you are not sure they are safe, make a test email account and do it. And don't use your main email account.

Spam is unsolicited commercial e-mail. Similar to junk mail in your regular snail mail. Websites do not have spam.
